Citrix XenDesktop is the clear choice for desktop virtualization and delivers virtual desktops as a service to users anywhere.  With Citrix XenDesktop, users can access their virtual desktops and applications across any network and device.  By implementing a virtual desktops  (VDI) you can reduce desktop management TCO up to 40 percent by centralizing virtual desktops in the datacenter and simplifying the traditional desktop lifecycle.

Citrix XenDesktop is built on an open architecture to offer customers the choice and flexibility of virtualization platform and endpoint devices. Unlike other desktop virtualization (VDI) alternatives, Citrix XenDesktop simplifies desktop management by using a single master virtual desktop image to deliver personalized virtual desktops to both virtual machines and physical endpoints and enables IT to manage service levels with built-in performance monitoring.

How desktop delivery works

  1. Authentication – With virtualization, users can access their virtual desktops from almost any computer. Typically, the connection will be from either a desktop appliance in the office or from a PC from home for remote desktop access. When connecting to the virtual desktop from a desktop appliance at work, users simply switch the device on and they are presented with an authentication request. If they are connecting to the virtual desktop from a home PC for remote desktop access, they will navigate to a Web page that looks identical to the desktop appliance authentication page. At this point, the users enter their credentials, and the next thing they will see is the virtual desktop which is identical to their corporate desktop in the office.

  2. Brokering and desktop assembly – After authentication, the Desktop Delivery Controller (DDC) identifies the user and dynamically assembles her virtual desktop. The appropriate desktop operating system is streamed into the hosting environment using the built-in Provisioning Services. The user’s profile is added to the desktop operating system, and the user’s applications are made available via integrated application delivery technology included with XenDesktop Enterprise and Platinum editions. This assembly can be scheduled to occur before the user tries to connect ensuring instant access to the user’s virtual desktop while allowing effective power and hosting infrastructure utilization, as well as streamlined centralized desktop management.


  1. Open architecture – As part of a complete open-architecture desktop virtualization (VDI) and desktop management implementation, Citrix XenDesktop allows IT administrators the flexibility to use almost any hosting infrastructure (Microsoft Hyper-V (when available), VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3, blade PCs or Citrix XenServer), a broad range of client platforms (Windows, Windows XPe, Windows CE, Linux, Mac OS, Windows Virtual Server) and any application virtualization solution (Citrix XenApp and Microsoft Application Virtualization).

  2. Desktop delivery – Once the user’s identity has been verified, his desktop environment is then delivered via the ICA protocol. As part of the user verification stage, policies controlling the user’s environment can be applied such as limiting the user’s ability to upload files if they are connecting from a home PC. Additionally, XenDesktop can also stream a virtual desktop over the LAN to a standardized PC or desktop appliance from a single desktop image that is managed in the datacenter for truly streamlined centralized desktop management. This centralized desktop management and control of the desktop leverages the processing power of the endpoint as part of a complete datacenter-to-the-desktop desktop virtualization or virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) implementation.  Since all corporate data is centrally stored and managed inside the datacenter, data security—of confidential information, intellectual property, customer records, patient data, etc.—is ensured.  Furthermore, users can gain remote desktop access to their corporate desktops and virtual applications from anywhere—even in the event of a natural or man-made disaster—thus ensuring business continuity.

Key components

The key components of XenDesktop include:

Delivery controller – Authenticates users, manages assembling the user’s desktop environment and brokers connections between the user and his virtual desktop.


The virtual desktop agent – Installed on the VM or PC Blade, the agent enables direct connections between the Client and the user’s virtual desktop.


The desktop receiver – Installed on the connecting endpoint device, the client enables a high speed connection to the virtual desktop.


Integrated application delivery – Virtualizes and delivers hosted or streamed applications into virtual desktops in the datacenter.

Secure desktop delivery – When users are connecting from home or anywhere outside the corporate firewall, XenDesktop secures these connections via SSL by using Citrix Access Gateway technology. The Access Gateway is a hardened appliance deployed in the corporate DMZ which allows SSL encrypted XenDesktop connections to traverse the corporate firewall securely.


WAN optimization – Customers may often use XenDesktop for desktop delivery to users who are not in the same building as the datacenter and to remote locations such as branch offices, thus enabling remote desktop access. Citrix Access Gateway technology can be employed between these locations to optimize user performance through Quality of Service (QoS) management. Citrix Repeater is able to prioritize different parts of the user experience so that, for example, user experience is not degraded in the branch location when one user chooses to send a large file or print job over the network.


EdgeSight performance monitoring – XenDesktop incorporates Citrix EdgeSight to allow detailed monitoring of the virtual desktop hosting infrastructure, delivering real-time and historical virtual machine information on CPU, memory, bandwidth and disk access. EdgeSight performance monitoring can be used not only to analyze and troubleshoot issues, but also to warn IT Administrators in advance when issues may arise.


Support – XenDesktop users will frequently be located in offices that may not have local access to support staff. To address this, XenDesktop incorporates Citrix GoToAssist, allowing support staff to remotely support XenDesktop users.


EasyCall Voice Services – Citrix expects that the newfound freedom XenDesktop provides will encourage users to access their virtual desktops from many different locations both inside and outside of the organization. To help users access voice communications along with their virtual desktop, XenDesktop includes Citrix EasyCall voice services that integrates communications into desktop delivery and other applications. Citrix EasyCall voice services allow users to initiate a call from their desktop (by simply moving their mouse over any phone number) and have it connect the call between the corporate PBX and any phone that may be nearby the user.
